Discover Old Town Bar

Diversity of phoenix town: Bar between East and West

Overview

On a walking and panoramic tour we get to know the modern town of Bar, the first nautical center and port in Montenegro. In the urban part of the town, numerous monuments testify to the rich history and connections to Europe. During this tour we will see, among other things, a monument to Pope Dukljanin and the temple of St. Jovan Vladimir. On our way to the Old Town, the largest open-air museum, the place where West and East meet, 4.5 km from the coast, we will see three magnificent religious objects of different religions.

We will be waiting for you at the beginning of the Bar waterfront where a shuttle bus from the port will take you. We will see the largest marina  in Montenegro with a capacity of over 1000 berths. The promenade will take us to King Nikola’s Palace, former summer residence, and today a town museum.

We will pass by the Orthodox Temple of Sv. Jovan Vladimir painted with the old technique. The temple is unique because of the fresco where all people of the world are represented, then philosophers, but also opposing ideologies (communism and monarchy), as well as numerous Biblical motifs from the Old and New Testaments.

During the panoramic ride, we will see St. Peter’s Cathedral, the largest Islamic cultural center in Montenegro, within which is the Mosque “Selimija”.

Unlike other Old Towns in the Mediterranean, the Old Town of Bar is located in the foothill of Rumija Mountain.

It is the largest archeological site, an open-air museum with over 250 objects. We start our walk from the main gate guarded by the Venice Lion. How and when the West opened the door to the East, the guides from AVE Tours travel agency will tell you, while visiting the town’s most significant monuments.

We will also find out why the town is called Montenegrin Pompeii. During our free time, we will enjoy the streets of Old Town Bar, that are full of authentic national cuisine restaurants and souvenir shops that evoke the life of the town of Bar.

Old Olive tree, over 2000 years, testifies to the tumultuous history of Bar, but also to the coexistence of peoples in this region. This olive tree is one of the oldest in Europe and has been under state protection since 1957. Many couples love to get married at this Monument of Nature.

Why the Old Olive Tree is located in a place called Mirovica, what fruits are used for… and many other stories, legends, you will find from the AVE Tours guide under the canopy of this sacred tree.

Returning to the urban Bar at the end of our excursion, you can have a chance and enjoy a walk in one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Montenegro, and spend your free time on the beach.

This is the tour to get when you’re in Bar, Montenegro. We visited the old olive tree and then the old town of Bar with the castle ruins. And we had time to do some shopping outside the castle walls before shuttling back to the main port.

I was very fortunate to do the Discover Old Town Bar tour with Aida as my guide. It was like spending time with a good friend as she explained everything in a very knowledgeable and relaxed manner. Aida speaks excellent English and was able to answer all my questions. First visiting the Old Olive Tree, then spending a wonderful two hours discovering the history of Old Town Bar and enjoying the panoramic views. We enjoyed a Turkish Coffee and Pomegranate drink before driving back to Bar to look through the Church of St Jovan Vladimir. I highly recommend this tour and AVE Tours.
