Dubrovnik – Entrance from Ploče

Dubrovnik has two faces – one for the busy summer and the other for the cozy winter when, as the locals say, the city is in a state of relaxation. Both are particularly enchanting.

The main street of Dubrovnik is called Stradun, the most attractive street right in the center of the Old City. The Stradun Street divides the Old Town into two almost equal parts – the southern and the northern. It stretches from one gate to another. The Stradun can be entered from the Pile Gate from the side of the new Dubrovnik, or from the Ploče Gate next to the old port.

How was Dubrovnik positioning itself on the prestigious world map throughout the history and why is it today one of the TOP travel destinations?

The power of human wisdom one can definitely feel in Dubrovnik.

It was a city where natural resources were limited and the sea was the main source of existence. Knowing that, the locals have chosen to be engaged with maritime activities and trade. In the 15th century the fleet of Dubrovnik counted about 200 ships. The port of Dubrovnik – the gates of the Balkans – conducts transportation and trade around the entire Mediterranean area, from the Asia Minor and Africa coasts to the Atlantic. The city was always well connected with the European countries by trade relations and transport links, especially with Italian ports and cities.

Cultural life and art were developing in the economically strong Dubrovnik, and nowadays hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the works of artists that have left their mark in this beautiful city.

In 1979 the Old City of Dubrovnik has been included in the UNESCO world heritage list as the museum city and the most significant tourist attraction in Yugoslavia. You will see why many travelers from different parts of the world have highlighted that Dubrovnik old city walls are among the most beautiful in Europe. They were built when the city has been founded, and their significance is priceless.

The first thing that will astonish you is those monumental city walls that protect the old city of Dubrovnik from all sides stretching for more than 2 km. They encircle the city and are one of the most beautiful city walls in Europe.

One more interesting thing about Dubrovnik is that the Old City has less than 1000 residents, but the number of people visiting it every year is thousand times higher.
